New Painting -???

August 20th, 2010

I’ve been working on this one over the course of the entire summer.  I’ve had a difficult time settling on a name so I thought I would give you an opportunity for input.  Any suggestions?

Spring Cleaning

John Kelley studio

Those who know me well may appreciate this more than most.  I have eliminated about half of the things that were cluttering up my studio. Josh asked me if it was more difficult to concentrate in such a clean space . That is a pretty good question.  I did manage one painting in my newly cleaned work space. Does it look better or worse?

“Roses” 8″x20″ Oil on Board

You’ve got to love roses. They scream “paint me!” I actually think they are more appealing in a painting. In real life they just die and leave petals on my studio floor. Here are some more photos of the studio.

Below  is another photo of the paintings that I have entered into the Energen show.  They were accepted along with another small landscape.

Flowers and Apples

24″x24″ Oil on Canvas

Here is the still life I have been working on the past couple of days. I have changed my palette rather drastically this summer, which has been a lot of fun. As a result my still life paintings are turning out much brighter. I also set up my color corrected bulb and my florescent lights all to the left of the objects. It was a great way to find out what a lousy job the incandescent, color corrected bulb is doing at matching north light. The color corrected bulb was much warmer than the 5000K florescent lights. I didn’t have any problem finding warm and cool contrasts in this one.

As always, you can contact me if you are interested in this painting.

8″ x 8″ Oil on Panel

This is one of the paintings I will have on display at the Kentuck Festival in October. The Festival is a local arts festival in Northport Alabama that specializes in folk art. It is only 20 minutes from my home and is the only outdoor show I do. You can find out more about the festival here.

Oil Painting by John Kelley

Here is a sneak peak at the still life oil painting I have been working on.  There is a good chance this one is headed for the closet for the time being.  The paint has begun to dry and I can’t stand working on sticky paint.  so I’ll give it a couple of weeks to fully dry and then will work on it again. I’ve spent a good portion of the week building my own panels to do some more beach paintings on.  Hopefully I’ll knock out several of those tomorrow.

6″ x 8″ Oil painting by John Kelley

The colors in this painting are very subtle.  This means that it is almost impossible to capture the changes between warm and cool colors with my digital camera.  Maybe it’s time to take a photography class.  I really love the process of doing these small paintings each day but I’m beginning to have that itch to see these apples in a larger context.

6″ x 6″ Oil Painting on Raymar Panel

This is a pretty good example of what  it’s like  around our house these days.  Five children, one mom and a dad hiding down in the studio.  Don’t get me wrong. Being surrounded is a blessing.  It just makes it hard to paint!

This painting was done earlier in the year.  I just never got around to posting it.

An apple a day is supposed to keep the doctor away and now so is a glass of wine (that’s one glass!). So we could call this one ‘remedies’ or ‘A Painting for Health Nuts’.
