Dune Paintings #2, Day 2

John Kelley Oil Painting

6″ x 8″ Oil on Panel SOLD

This was done in the afternoon just on the other side of the dune I painted in the morning.  I found out that I can paint while having conversations with several different people.  I had thought hiding out on this nature trail would keep the traffic down, but I was wrong. However all the people I met were very nice and enjoyable to talk with and it’s always nice to receive encouragement while you paint!

Today I also sold the painting I painted in the morning. Thanks Betsy!

John Kelley Oil Painting

6″ x 8″ Dune Study

Here is the little painting I did this morning out at Grayton Beach State Park. This park is a painters paradise with the contrast of the dunes, the colors in the grasses and the lake on the north side of the dunes. Just over the dunes is the beach.

I started with the shadows on this one because they were the only area that I was fairly confident of the color (blueish-purple) and it turned out to be fairly effective. One of the struggles of painting on location is that you must always leave out the majority of what you see and stick to the main values shapes and colors that drew you to the motif. Toward the end of this painting it was very tempting to start painting in all the individual pieces of grass but I made myself stop and I’m glad that I did.

I will be going back to the park late this afternoon to try and do two more studies.

Grayton Beach Painting Trip (day 1)

August 10th, 2009

Is blogging a painting trip interesting? I’m not sure but writing a blog entry is much more interesting than planting myself in front of the T.V.

After arriving here in Grayton Beach I spent most of the afternoon searching out places to paint the rest of the week.  There are some really beautiful spots but none of the places I have found have easy access parking.  so it looks like wherever I paint tomorrow will involve a hike.  Two of the state parks which are close by may be my best bet and I will be checking them out tomorrow.

Here is the wonderful bed and breakfast.

6′x6″, Oil Painting on Raymar Panel

Here is a little creek I would like to go sit by for awhile. I almost named this one peace because it is what I think about when I do these little treescapes.

“Leaning Your Way”

6″ x 8″ Oil painting by John Kelley

The colors in this painting are very subtle.  This means that it is almost impossible to capture the changes between warm and cool colors with my digital camera.  Maybe it’s time to take a photography class.  I really love the process of doing these small paintings each day but I’m beginning to have that itch to see these apples in a larger context.

“Surrounded” by John Kelley

6″ x 6″ Oil Painting on Raymar Panel

This is a pretty good example of what  it’s like  around our house these days.  Five children, one mom and a dad hiding down in the studio.  Don’t get me wrong. Being surrounded is a blessing.  It just makes it hard to paint!

This painting was done earlier in the year.  I just never got around to posting it.
